We love the green grass roof we installed on our Garage. We also enjoy reading about other people’s green grass roofs. If you know of any or have built one yourself, drop us an email.

The first “green” Jewel-Osco, complete with a green roof, an indoor air quality system and energy-conserving light bulbs highlighting food displays, opens at 6 a.m. today at Kinzie and Desplaines in the ever-more-tony River West neighborhood.

The store, five years in the making because of a variety of special site engineering and use requirements, boasts Jewel-Osco’s first in-store dietician to help shoppers pick healthy foods, a wine steward to help choose wines, a chef to prepare anything from a sandwich to a meal, and a full line of Wild Harvest organic foods.

Jewel-Osco operates 36 stores in Chicago.

Promising ready-to-eat meals and high-end selections of wine, spirits and beer in addition to the usual staples, Jewel-Osco spokesman Miguel Alba boasts, “The people living in this area have been looking forward to it as much as we have.”

The store’s “Shop the World” section is up front, featuring a selection of locally sourced goods such as Mike Ditka’s Hall of Fame salsa and Earth’s Best organic baby food. There’s a selection of imported fare as well, from McVitie’s digestive milk chocolate cookie wafer to Cahill’s Porter cheese marbleized with Guinness beer.
