Follow and learn from a Canadian family building a home in the City of Calgary. The project is an environmentally friendly, modern small house that blends into the cultural heritage of urban Calgary. Our site includes research from home building sites, home renovation sites, and Calgary companies involved in our home building project.
We took an almost 5 month hiatus from our blog. Don’t let the pictures fool you. Our house is almost finished, it’s beautiful and we are very happy to be finally moved in. We arrived in early February and have had a wonderful time unpacking and re-visiting everything that had been in storage for almost 3 years!
I’ll post pictures of the house shortly but until then, I’ll be posting stories collected from around the Internet about living Green at home. Here is the first one, from www.thebudgetecoist.com.
Did you know that only 3 percent of the earth’s water is fresh water? It’s a vital yet limited natural resource. Consider this: turning on the faucet isn’t just about water usage; it takes energy to collect, purify and pump the water that makes its way to our homes. In addition, any water that goes down the drain needs to be treated, which also requires energy. Add in the energy needed to heat water for household use, and we can quickly see the environmental implications every time we turn on the tap. Read on for tips on how to reduce household water use.

Long time no posting
We have not been posting for the past four weeks as we finally get the place ready to move in.
Everything is not fully completed yet, but we are compliant and authorized to go.
We have a moving van ready for Monday, February 4th 2007! We are looking for a couple more friends to help us. If you are free on Monday, please send me an email for more details.
New pictures to be posted tomorrow morning.

We arrived on site to see that our kitchen cabinets have begun to be installed and that almost all the walls have received a coat of primer. We were really happy with they way things were looking this day.
More images from our flickr gallery can be found at September 12, 2007 - The walls are primed..

On a positive note, the painter finished staining the top-floor ceiling. The bad news: our house was broken into. Someone broke in and stole our painters stereo in the middle of the night. See the next day (The Job Site From Hell) for what it looked like out-side when this happened.

When you are building a home, you have good days and bad days. This was a bad day. We received a complaint from a neighbor and arrived to our house to see the remains of Fat Cat Stucco having just started on our house. I took these photographs to share with our contractor, DCM homes by Design (DCM = Dana C Munn).
We were told that there was no room in the back for a garbage bin, so I personally moved everything in the back driveway (which was mostly Fat Cat Stucco supplies) to on-top of the garage so a garbage bin could be delivered. Although I was able to clear the way in just under an hour, I ended up taking the next two days off work at Critical Mass to put all the garbage into garbage bags, load up the garbage bin, clean up misc. junk and remove items from neighbors yards.
Our moral and feelings are still a bit raw in November and we feel like we are still recovering from this week. The rest of the images from September 18th, 2007 - The job site from hell.
