Home Building Blog - Eco-Friendly and Green
About
January 27th, 2007 by Ryan JohnstonAt the start of 2006, a new website launched about two newlyweds building an eco-friendly nest in the heart of Canada’s oil capital Calgary, Alberta.
Although the energy-rich and increasingly affluent western provinces of Canada are not the first place one tends to think of when it comes to low-energy homes, there is a growing interest in learning about green technologies and energy conservation. With almost no publicity, more than 2,000 people visited the site in the first two weeks.
The couple is gathering content for their website from home-building sites, their own research and local companies involved in the project. The goal is to help others who may be thinking of using low-energy technologies but do not know where go for more information.
While the project is still in its infancy, the vision is to build an environmentally responsible, small foot-print house that blends into Calgary’s historical neighbourhood of Ramsay, just outside the downtown core. The house will be primarily made of concrete and heated by the earth — with insulated-concrete-forms and super high-efficiency gas heating. The website is updated daily with content such as site reports, local resources, eco-friendly interiors, environmentally responsible suppliers and new green technology.

Although we are building with concrete, our influence is the Arts & Crafts style. This picture of the Gamble House, built by the architects Greene and Greene in 1909 is a perfect example of that style. We plan to encorporate the Arts & Crafts style in almost all aspects of the interior and exterior design of the house.
